New research reveals that Devon is the top-rated location in Britain for camping ahead of World Camping Day on the 29th of June.
June 2025: New research into the UK’s favourite and top-rated campsites has revealed which counties in Britain have the best rated campsites according to Pitchup. The data shows a strong concentration of top reviewed campsites in both the south west and north of England.
Searches for ‘campsites by the beach’ increased 33% 2023 to 2024.
Between 2023 and 2024, Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks found that people searching for ‘campsites by the beach’ increased 33%. This is backed up by data from Pitchup, which shows campsites in Devon, followed closely by Cornwall, both in close proximity to the beach, had the largest number of campsites with a rating of 9 out of 10 or 10 out of 10.
The data was taken from the Pitchup website by analysing through the filter function which counties had the highest number of campsites rated 9 or above out of 10 on the platform.

With sites within walking distance of both the North and South coasts, visitors can enjoy activities from rock-pooling and bodyboarding to scenic walks and beach relaxation. Families, dog-owners and outdoor enthusiasts can choose from seaside pitches or secluded woodland retreats in areas such as Yelland, Bideford, Frithelstock and Woolacombe. Cornwall follows closely with 179 highly rated sites, featuring dramatic cliffs, golden beaches and charming seaside towns; whether tucked away near St Ives or closer to lively Newquay, campers can find options around Cambrose, Barripper, Crankie and Falmouth.
North Yorkshire ranks third with 129 top-rated campsites set against dramatic cliffs, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales, offering both adventure and tranquility. Coastal spots like Robin Hood’s Bay provide watersports and rugged scenery, while inland locations such as Coneysthorpe, Malton, Nawton and Welburn cater to those seeking countryside retreats. With so many highly rated options across the UK, campers are spoiled for choice when planning a holiday tailored to their preferences, from family-friendly sites to dog-friendly getaways and everything in between.
Comment from Kevin Darvill, Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks Marketing Director
Kevin Darvill from Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks has provided a comment on these findings:
“When you’re heading off on a camping adventure, a little planning goes a long way to make sure you’re comfortable, dry, and ready for anything. We always recommend packing a microfibre towel for its space-saving and fast-drying abilities; it’s the Swiss Army knife of camping gear. Electrolyte tablets are a smart addition too, whether you’ve been hiking all day or enjoying one too many marshmallows around the campfire. And don’t underestimate the value of extra socks as dry feet can make or break your trip! These simple additions can turn a good camping holiday into a great one.”
