Hele Cornmill Ilfracombe
Hele Cornmill is a unique 16th century water mill in North Devon and is celebrating its 500th anniversary in 2025.
Free entry to the mill where you can learn how we make the flour used in our selection of cakes! View the mill workings and learn about the history of the mill we've discovered over the last 14 years; its owners and workers of the past five centuries. An information film also shows in the Gallery.
Located just 300m from stunning Hele Bay Beach, a visit to the mill makes a perfect family day out.
All our seating is outside but under cover. The tea garden will also be open in fine weather.
Hele Cornmill is a Grade II listed water mill dating back to at least 1525. Flour was milled here until the mid 1930s, and later it sadly fell derelict. In the 1970s the mill was restored by a local man named Chris Lovell. Now fully working, the mill grinds a heritage species of organic wheat to provide flour for the adjacent award-winning tea room.
Regrettably, the mill is not suitable for wheel-chair users or the infirm as there are four high steps to the entrance and stairs inside.
Please note that although dogs are welcome in the tea room and gardens, we cannot allow them into the water mill for food hygiene reasons as we mill flour there.
